One of my favorite characters in the old bike scene has left the saddle, and the world is poorer for his absence. Dr. George Cohen, otherwise known as Norton George for his devotion to single-cylinder Nortons (plus a certain Rem Fowlers Peugeot-engined TT racer), fought well against an aggressive cancer diagnosed late last year, but knew the jig was up, that swarf had fouled his mains and blocked the oil lines.  What he leaves behind for those lucky enough to have called him friend, is a ton of wry memories, and his distinctive voice echoing through our heads, with some crack about our terrible workshops, ill-prepared machinery, or silly ideas.  He was mad as a hatter for sure, but a hell of a lot of fun to be around.

George was also a devotee of using his vintage machinery to the hilt, blasting his favorite 1927 Model 18 Norton racer on the Isle of Man, and the roads around his Somerset Shed .  Arriving by train for a visit to Georges sprawling country estate was an exercise in bravery, as hed likely pick you up in his 1926 Norton Model 44 racer with alloy zeppelin sidecar. Strapping your luggage on the back, and no helmet required, meant you experienced the full terror of an ancient, poorly braked but surprisingly quick big single in flight along the ultra-narrow, deeply dug-in Roman roads of the area. The mighty Bonk of the Nortons empty Brooklands can reverberated along the 8 deep earthen walls, as we tore around blind corners of these unique Somerset roads like Mr Toad and Co., headed for home the fastest way possible.  Unforgettable!

George visited the USA a few times, and we were fellow judges at the Legends of the Motorcycle Concours in 2008, at the Ritz-Carlton hotel in Half Moon Bay.  Id brought two bikes for us to swap on the Sunday morning Legends Ride - neither a Norton, although I had a 1925 Model 18 racer at the time (it was hors de combat from my own relentless flogging).   So George got to experience a vintage Sunbeam for the first time, as the photos show, which he quite liked (My Norton is faster, of course he said), but preferred a spin on The Mule, my 1933 Velocette KTT mk4, which shared his favorite Nortons camshaft up top.  Well actually it was the other way round, as Norton copied the Velocette design!  Which he grudgingly admitted with a half-smile as he hand-rolled another cig.

A few days prior, wed picked up a pair of racing Nortons from California collector Paul Adams, which were entered into the Concours, and it would be hard to imagine two more dissimilar characters, who both loved Nortons with passion.  Paul Adams is an ex-Navy pilot of many years experience, with the unflappable reserve of a military man, and George, well, flapped.   Those two were chalk and cheese, and barely kept from breaking into open argument! Still, George later admitted Paul had a very nice collection, and that his workshop was really clean.

Something else he left behind; his incredible self-published love poem to Norton, created from his personal archive of early factory press materials, photos, and documents - Flat Tank Norton. If youre a fan of early Nortons, its essential reading, and an entertaining mix - some of the early photos of James Landsdowne Norton himself can be found nowhere else.  Flat Tank Norton is the kind of book only a devoted enthusiast can produce, as a publisher would have squeezed out the quirks to increase general interest, but they would have taken out the George factor, which is what give the book its tremendous charm.  It needs a reprint, as copies run on Amazon for nearly $1000!
Another memorable moment with George came not on a bike, but in one of his select few cars, at the 2013 Vintage Revival Montlhéry meeting.  Hed brought his c.1908 Brasier Voiture de Course after breaking down somewhere in France, while driving the all-chain drive monster all the way from his Somerset home.  Hed sorted the brakeless beast, and was enjoying flying laps around the banking, and offered me a ride, which I accepted with something like fear.  George drove like he rode, and the Brasier had no seat belts, roll bars, suspension to speak of, or front brakes, but it did have an enormous 12 Liter Hispano-Suiza V-8 OHC aeroplane engine with 220hp on tap!  I put myself in the hands of Fate, and George.  I climbed aboard, clinging to the scuttle, and filmed the ordeal with one hand, laughing 100% of the time, as he slid the rear end on the short corners, and got as high up the banking as he could, while the behemoth shuddered, roared, bucked, and squealed.  Unforgettable, just like the man.

TATA SUMO EXTREME CONCEPT

Tata’s stall at the Expo has on display a souped-up concept out of the old faithful â€" Sumo. The 4×4 vehicle is being called as the Sumo Extreme and is based on a version of Sumo kitted up for army duties.

The Sumo Extreme is also endowed with a thoughtful skid plate up front and a rear central towing hook for trailers. The steering is power assisted and the braking is taken care of by discs in the front wheels and drums on the rear.

While the Sumo army comes with a turbocharged intercooled 3.0 liter 114 bhp diesel, the Extreme lets you down with a miserly 85PS. The 2956 cc CR4 engine however delivers a good amount of grunt of 250 Nm. The transmission is 5-speed manual with overdrive. The shift-on-the-run 4×4 is selectable via a knob on the dashboard in the Army version and the Extreme most likely follows suit.

Extreme comes with a double wishbone with coil springs and anti-roll bars up front and a simple and sturdy parabolic leaf at the rear. The vehicle weighs in more than 2.5 tons (gross) with a 65 liter fuel tank.

Recall Alert Honda Philippines Recalls City Due to Airbag

Honda Motor Company Ltd. had issued a recall in relation to the drivers side airbag due to the inflator. If you have a City built from 2003 until 2004, read this up.


With an investigation done by Honda Cars Philippines Inc., a possible problem was detected during the inflators production process at the airbag supplier. In an event of a frontal accident, the inflator might deliver a higher pressure than normal.

In line with this, letters had been sent to affected customers and will be contacted by authorized dealers through phone. If the car had been sold, the original owner must notify the dealership at once to inform the new owner.

Repairs will start December 8, 2014 and affected owners are requested to call their nearest Honda dealership.

Consumer Reports does not like the Karma.  In fact, they give it a failing grade. 

The Karma ranks as our lowest-rated luxury sedan. Of all sedans, only three have lower overall scores: Chrysler 200,Dodge Avenger, and Nissan Versa SV.

Ouch.

It looks to me like Karma is going to be a beautiful failure.  With Tesla coming online, with a much more practical vehicle, and other big luxury players looking into electrification, customers will have few reasons besides styling to pick the Karma.  Years from now, collectors will gather to share horror stories about bad software and clumsy user interfaces.  

Still, I have to give credit to Fisker, even if they do fail, at least they managed to produce a beautiful and driveable vehicle, which is more than can be said for many other electric start-ups.

Kia Optima Sportswagon

The all-new Kia Optima Sportswagon, Kias first ever D-segment tourer, will make its global premiere at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show (86th Salon International de lAutomobile) on 1 March. The car is inspired by the 2015 SPORTSPACE concept which was shown for the first time at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show. The Optima Sportswagon offers the striking exterior design and high quality interior of the 2016 Optima sedan, with the added practicality and appeal of a tourer bodystyle. According to Michael Cole, Chief Operating Officer, Kia Motors Europe:

"The Optima has come to define Kia globally, and is credited with kick-starting the brands design-led transformation. The SPORTSPACE concept from 2015 was a clear intention of where we wanted to take the Optima next, and the Sportswagon adds an extra level of style and practicality to the well-received sedan."

It should be noted that in Europe, two thirds of all sales are in the D-segment, and three quarters of all flee t sales in this class, are made up of tourers The car will be available with a choice of efficient and responsive gasoline and diesel powertrains, including a high-powered GT model.

The Optima Sportswagon is due to go on sale across Europe in Q4 2016.

History
According to everyones best friend in the web named Wikipedia, an eclipse "is an astronomical event that occurs when an astronomical object is temporarily obscured". Other referrals to the word may include a song by Bonnie Tyler and one of the film adaptation of a popular novel series by Stephanie Meyer. However, let us not delve far from the car we are talking about here.

Launched in 1991 as a shared model with the Plymouth Laser and Eagle Talon, the Eclipse had gone through four generations but starting with the third it became an independent model, mostly sharing parts and its platform with the Galant. The 4G Eclipse was first made available in 2006 in either 4-cylinder or V6 engine and coupe or convertible bodies. It grew in size but carried a less desirable driving characteristics (more o n this later). As with the Endeavor and US Galant, the Eclipse hit the graveyard after 20 years of existence due to sagging sales.

Nearly 10 years after the 2G Eclipses local release, Mitsubishi offered this one as a niche model alongside the Lancer Evolution. It was silently dropped after four years in the line-up, which saw the rise of the category the following year due to the arrival of the Toyota 86 and Ford Mustang.

Value and Costs
Imports from the US (which is fine) and locally purchased units would cost you P1,000,000-P1,500,000, a reasonable price for a two door coupe sold in limited quantities.

Fuel consumption is on the lower side given the larger engine, which is expected in this class. Parts availability would be limited to the dealership especially this is a low volume vehicle.

Exterior and Interior
Although it looks less aggressive than before, sleek curves are still the spotlight of the Eclipse. While the coupe comes stock locally, US models can be customized with various accessories that fits the buyers personality and lifestyle.

Despite a slung exterior design, the front seats fits anyone just right while the rear is a generalization of all coupes - reserved for kids. A space era themed interior which is complemented by an instrument panel and controls with a blue hue. Dont fret, a sunroof, leather seats, and a Rockford Fosgate sound system are standard.

Engine
A wise decision by Mitsubishi is to bring the 6G75 3,828 V6 having 267hp at 5,750rpm and 357Nm at 4,500rpm at tap, since the other option - a naturally aspirated 4-cylinder - is sluggish at best. It is powerful but does it ignite driving excitement? To the next paragraph.

Driving Impressions
No thanks to a heavy body and a front wheel drive layout, it wouldnt want curved roads for lunch but prefers straight roads for its diet. Handling is sporty enough to fulfill your fantasies, though. Americans like straight lines but enthusiasts prefer the other way around.

Verdict
Just like someone getting older, the Eclipse went far from its memorable experience. While it may have some fans, the appeal is very limited. If you want something fun to drive, consider other choices first before arriving to a decision.

Safety risk of Heavy Quadricycles

Quadricycles, which as the name suggest, were originally derived from motorcycles. They have emerged as a new class of sub-compact vehicles in Europe.

They are small and fuel-efficient. I have recently noticed several Universities here in the UK using street-legal quadricycles. These include the Club Car Villager 2+2 LSV, the Renault Twizy 80, the Tazzari ZERO and the Ligier IXO J LINE 4 Places

Their safety tests are different from other cars as they do not have to pass any of the rigorous crash tests to which cars are subjected. However,according to a recent report from the EURO NCAP, frontal and side impacts at 50km/h, revealed severe safety problems for all four cars.

The vehicles were scored primarily on data from crash dummies but penalties were also given for poor performance of the structure or restraints. The Ligier and the Tazzari had major failings of their restraint systems in the fronta l test. In the Ligier, the upper connection of the driver’s seatbelt pulled out of the structure, leaving the dummy unrestrained and leading to a high risk of injury.

In the Tazzari, the driver seatbelt broke and the driver’s head hit the steering wheel with a force that indicated a high risk of serious or fatal injury. The structure of the Club Car virtually collapsed in the frontal impact. The Renault Twizy - the only vehicle of the four tested to have an airbag as standard - scored best but its stiff structure and restraint system resulted in some dangerously high dummy readings.
