Used Car Review MINI Clubman 2010 2014

Have fun this month with something novel from Myk Belmonte that you can buy for less.

2010-2014 MINI Clubman

History
We all (or everyone) knows the success that BMW had when it purchased the MINI brand from the ailing Rover group back in the 90s, especially it launched a new model of the Mini Hatch at the turn of the millennium while killing the original one which shouldered on for decades. So successful that numerous spin-off models were made available years after which expanded to the likes of a convertible, coupe, crossover, and wagon body styles. One of the vehicles that we are going to review today is the MINI Clubman, the third member of the family born after the hatchback and its convertible derivative.

Launched in 2007 as a Mini Hatch variant, the Clubman name was first used as a facelift of the classic MINI back in the 1970s, while wagons of the same era use the Traveller or Countryman (the latter became its o wn model in 2010). This wagon (or estate, as fondly called by the Brits) became the first model in the MINI range to feature suicide doors but was dropped in its 2015 redesign. Just like most models in the brand, one can get the regular version, diesel engines, supercharged models, and the JCW. This model had a "Clubvan" variant, a vehicle designed for commercial purposes, added in 2012.

As part of the MINI brand launch in the Philippines, the Clubman was one of three models that the marque brought in. Just like any model in the stable, one can customize the vehicle to his/her desires from the exterior to the inside. It was dropped from the line-up in 2014, and two years later the second generation model saw local introduction.

Value and Costs
Sold to the tune of P2,150,000 when it was brand new, used ones rarely pop-up the classifieds block and you can get one for P1,950,000 for a locally released unit. Those sold via the grey market and private im ports of old models can be obtained for less cash. Unlike the MINI Hatch, only the naturally aspirated and the suprcharged models were available.

If you aim for the supercharged models, make sure you drive it always to avoid carbon deposit buildup (yes, the main reason why you should drive). Another cause of concern if the previous owner had driven the car for a long time on low oil pressure which may take a toll on oil and timing-chain rattle.

Exterior and Interior
Obviously, the main differences here which we will first tackle lies with the exterior design since exterior length is longer than its smaller sibling and somewhat rides higher with a tall ground clearance. The magic here is its suicide doors which was mentioned in the preceding chapters, since the passenger side door swings out towards the opposite side which means easy ingress/egress for the rear seat occupants. Another case are the rear doors which open sideways as against the hatchba cks upwards.

Just like what we mentioned in our previous MINI Hatchback review a month ago, stepping inside will give you a cabin that mixes the old and new. Bunches of circles are standard equipment and scattered around inside, with the centered positioned speedometer (which is large, by the way) being the highlight of the vehicle. If you are complaining with the space that the MINI Hatch offers you, rejoice since this one has lots of space but cargo room isnt that much.

Engine
Similar to its smaller brethren, interested buyers are only confined to one engine: a 1.6 but with two fuel systems. Youll encounter the naturally aspirated engine more often which powers the Cooper models displaces 118hp at 6,000rpm and 160Nm at 4,250rpm while going for the S rewards you 175hp at 5,500rpm and 240Nm at 1,600-5,000rpm on tap. Either of the two engines will satisfy your need for speed despite the added weight and size penalty but unlike the Hatch, only an automatic comes standard.

Driving Impressions
Some word of warning: handling and driving dynamics arent that much close to the original Mini, no thanks to the added bulk and size. Although you may enjoy this one in some levels, you might not buy this for the fun to drive persona alone.

Verdict
Success means expanding a vehicle line without anything to dilute the original formula it was known for. BMW expanding the MINI line produced various results which meant some didnt live up and some were done well. The Clubman isnt something for everyone, since driving capability is compromised and the exterior styling favors the practicality in you.

The Good:
  • Fun to drive
  • Additional practicality
  • More space
The Bad:
  • Not so good rear visibility
  • Funny exterior styling
  • Not for everyone
The Pick: Cooper model is more than enough

Used Car Review Nissan Teana 2007 2009

Want to experience the cushiest ride in the used car planet without costing you an arm? Myk Belmonte finds a solution to this problem

2007-2009 Nissan Teana

History
In the world of mid-sizers, Nissan and Toyota had been battling it out anywhere with a wide range of models under that size. Nissan has a number of them which includes the Altima, Maxima, Cefiro, and the Teana. The latter can be seen wearing the Maxima and Cefiro badges. Confused much?

2003 saw the introduction of the Teana in the Asian market and a year later to Europe. It is also exported under the Maxima (US and Canada, for example) and Cefiro (Singapore) names in other countries. With this in mind, writing this paragraph gave me a headache due to a puzzling number of names on a single body (or worse, different generations) in different nations.

We all know that Nissan was kinda late in their offerings, and in the case of the Teana, it was mad e available in 2007 - four years later. The XV40 Camry was the new kid on the block, the Galant 240M had a hard time luring buyers, the seventh generation Accord and the first generation 6 was getting old, and the Sonata spent most of its time in showroom floors; but the Teana failed to topple the class leader, which the older brother did so. Too little, too late. The Teana can be purchased until 2009 in two trims, the JK and the feature loaded JM.

Value and Costs
For under a million bucks, luxury can be had for less. Used Teanas can be purchased between P700,000-P800,000 but do remember that there are less units in the market, which makes hunting a challenge for someone.

You might need to have some part time job or work overtime to defray the expenses of this sedan. The V6 can drain your income but that should not be a problem if you have earnings similar to executives. Gadgets that are present in the car must be diligently watched on if the y fail.

Exterior and Interior
It may have the elegance but there is no denying that it looks old school. The exterior is somewhat bulky looking but the HID headlights and dual tailpipes brighten up this sedan. Lets not deal with this more.

The Teanas interior would have been trendy back in 2003, but four years later it is something that you cant understand. If the Camry has tons of faux wood that can be a cause of irritation, in the Nissan it is just fine and a classy matte finish comes standard. You cant help but say that the interior resembles something from a popular European furniture brand. Some Waterloo, the plastics used feel old and the switchgear is not something to be excited about. Passenger space, as always, is excellent and no one would complain.

Engine
From the award winning VQ engine family comes the Teanas motivator, a VQ23DE 2,349cc V6 that has 173hp at 6,000rpm and 231Nm at 4,000rpm. Since this is a V6, it could have been attacking rivals in the straight line but power deficit is evident due to the figures lingering in the 100 range. But the engine comes alive, lack of oomph notwithstanding, when it reaches above 3,000rpm. Still, the qualities of a VQ engine remains there, just like a political family.

Driving Impressions
Driving the Nissan is a challenge of extracting the available power for everyday usage. With the power pushing you back, weight has been balanced in the four tires whenever accelerating, cornering, or stopping. In real world conditions, the Teana is quick, despite the power deprivation.

Verdict
With all eyes aimed at the Camry during that time, the Teana was a great car that came out at the wrong time. If it was released earlier, then it could have gave the Accord and Camry a run for their money. People nowadays are well informed, if its late, good luck. But to be honest, the Teana is one ou tstanding car but youll be better off with other premium sedans.

The Good:
  • Comfortable ride
  • Fully equipped
  • Smooth operator
The Bad:
  • Not the drivers car
  • Bulky
  • Not the car that rings the bell
The Pick: JM

Autocops to patrol in Dubai this year

Dubai is adding a fleet of self-driving robot cars to its patrol resources later this year, writes Brian Byrne.

Described as a self-driving security robot, the unmanned vehicle will have a range of imaging sensors, including cameras and thermal monitors, scanners and radar. The systems will include licence plate and face recognition technologies.

Named OR-3, the vehicle will also have a drone on board to give it aerial surveillance capacity. The car will monitor for incidents and illegal behaviour, and will be controlled from a home base รข€¦ presumably staffed with real cops?
